The United States Postal Service works hard every single day to deliver millions of mailpieces to every conceivable address in the U.S.
Sometimes packages are returned to the Post Office by carriers because they cannot be delivered, or due to bad weather.
If you’re unable to make it down right away to the Post Office, then you may be curious: How long does USPS store packages? Here’s the link to my answer.
How Long Does USPS Hold Packages In 2022?
The vast majority of USPS mailing services hold packages for up to 15 business days. Each case receives a USPS second notice, which is usually a final one. The package is returned to its sender after the period of 15 days.
How Do You Know If USPS Holds Your Package?
Your U.S. Postal Service carrier attempts to deliver a package but is unable, they will leave a peach-colored PS Form 3849. When a U.S. Postal Service driver attempts to deliver the package and is unsuccessful, they’ll leave a pink-colored PS form 3849.
The PS Form 3849 is the Delivery Notice/Reminder/Receipt, and it’s the note that there is an item waiting for you in your local Post Office.
According to my experiences, the carrier of postal mail will place the note directly at the top so that it is visible from the rest and not obscured among other envelopes.
It could happen that you misplace it. Or you see it and you forget to go retrieve your parcel?
Be assured that the Post Office will not only issue the Second and Final Notices, but they also send them out three to five days later than the delivery attempted.
It’s the same PS Form 3849, however there is a box at the bottom left corner that reads “Final Notice”; if checked, that means that the time to pick up the parcel is nearing.
A space is available for the post carrier to enter the expiration date of the holding period. The parcel will then be returned to the address.
A huge exception to this 15-day rule is Priority Mail Express. Priority Mail Express items only hold for five days. Second/Final notices can be issued after three working days.
How do you find the location of your USPS packages?
If you live in a smaller town or city where there is only one Post Office location, then you likely know exactly where to go to get your pick-up mail.
If you have moved to a nearby location with multiple post offices, it might be difficult for you to find the right one.
USPS.com explains you that there are two methods to get this information.
First, the USPS Tracking page for your parcel will tell you where to go, once the tracking info has been updated to reflect that the Post Office is holding your item.
If that is not possible, please call 1-800-ASK USPS (1 800-275-8777), and ask for a customer representative.
How do I pick up the USPS Packet?
Picking up your USPS package that is being held is simple.
Bring along your PS Form3849 and your current photo ID. (For some people, you will need a driver’s permit; for others, a passport/ID card).
They’ll ask you to sign your form if it’s not yet signed. Then, they will check your ID and make sure that the signatures, names, faces, and addresses are correct.
Is it possible for someone else to pick up your package from the Post Office?
You can authorize someone else to pick up your package that is being held at the Post Office.
But, on the PS Form 3829 you’ll need to type something similar to:
(Name of retriever) has my permission to pick up mail for (Your Name).
Then, sign this note.
What is the USPS’s policy on storing packages for a PO box?
When you have an item that doesn’t fit in your PO Box, the Post Office leaves you a notification in your box that you have a parcel to pick up at the front counter.
Most cases will keep the item for at least 15 days. You will need to check the shipping service. This is similar to a normal package hold.
What Happens If You Don’t Pick Up A Package From The Post Office?
USPS attempts mail the package back to the sender once the waiting period expires.
Sometimes, however, there is no return address, or the information is illegible, making it an impossible return.
Mail could be left in these situations to go to the Dead Mail zone, which is where postal workers try find unidentified addresses and return the packages.
The good news: If you miss your holding period, there is still a chance your package can make its way to you.
You can’t be certain, and the message could end up on its return route. However, you can do it.
If the package cannot be returned to sender, it could be at a Mail Recovery Center (one located in GA, and one in MN).
The packages are scanned, and if found to be worth more than $25, they are held for an additional 60 days. You can only act during this time.
Complete a Mail Recovery Center Request Search Request. Include as much detail as possible regarding your parcel.
This includes the tracking information, barcodes and package size.
Then – you wait! The USPS will locate and return your package as quickly as possible.
Final thoughts: Don’t miss the 15-day window to pick up packages at your Post Office.
