Does Walmart Make Keys

Locksmith Pros And Cons

The first thing we need to talk about is the price.

Locksmiths are typically more expensive when comparing both sides, but in a plethora of cases, this is not a drawback because of the differences in quality and service they provide. You have probably heard the expression, ‘you get what you pay for,’ which can’t be truer in the arena of keys duplication. Walmart is a giant for a reason, but their emphasis is on automation instead of customer service. The idea of a machine handling our key copies seems great in theory, but in taking the personal element out of creating one, sometimes the right key is not produced. There is no reasoning with a machine that has a few generic menus when there is a specific request you need to make. The Walmart key copy price point can raise a red flag because the metals utilized are cheap and more importantly, not built to last.

Longevity of Keys Made

Just by holding a key it seems like something that is built to last forever, but this is not true and a real problem for ones that are getting used repeatedly. Locksmiths have far more leeway to determine the type of metal and materials to use in making your key. Cheap key copies can become weathered and warped over time, but a bigger concern is that the material used to make the key may be easily bent. Once the grooves no longer align on one, then you are looking at an enormous problem as the key is then rendered useless. Locksmiths have to use common sense and judgment based on what you desire in the key copy you need to have made to make sure it is the most beneficial solution for you.

More Options

Does Walmart key copy machine make keys that work everywhere? No, and most would be surprised how few circumstances the retailer can provide service on. Keys are all around us, and things like lawn equipment, safes and especially older doors will never be able to use a machine to generate the right grooves successfully. The number of key sizes and types in the ‘bank’ at Walmart are very limited. This is fine if a simple front door house key needs copying, but you will never realize how many types of keys there are until the duplication machine at Walmart keeps rejecting them. Locksmiths offer the most extensive array of solutions because the entire creed of the profession is built on adaptability.

Car Keys

We have all run into a situation resulting in being locked out of our automobile, so can Walmart make car keys for us to solve this problem? The answer is yes. However, newer vehicles have electronic countermeasures inside the car to make sure a simple copy will not access the trunk, doors, etc. While that is great to ward off criminals but what if you own the car and need access on the spot? This is where locksmiths come into the fray with their car key programming and duplication skills because they can mold problematic areas on the vehicle that store-bought copies cannot handle. For example, duplicate car keys that Walmart produces frequently have very stubborn fits inside ignitions, and occasionally do not allow turn over. It goes without saying that if you need another key for your car, then the situation is pretty serious, so simply told, it’s not worth taking the gamble. Consumers have to remember that key banks in stores are built to deliver speed, not quality. Locksmiths display their talent by procuring a perfect key. It is an art to accurately reproduce an original, and one they take pride in. The newer the make year and model is of your vehicle, less likely the key duplication machine will be able to deliver a key that will repeatedly work if it will even work in the first place.

Broken Or Bent Keys

If you have a key you are attempting to copy that is bent or broken, it is simply impossible to get it duplicated at Walmart duplicating key machine or various other department stores that have them. The machines at these locations rely on a finite amount of imperfections to operate. Additionally, the machine works by ‘accepting’ the key, similar to a handshake, and creating the duplicate accordingly. A misshaped key cannot make this ‘shake,’ and almost always the device will reject it altogether. Most people think that if a key is slightly altered, that it should still work. Keys are stubborn for a reason; so they cannot be manipulated by burglars or people that shouldn’t have access. If you have a key that doesn’t pass the ‘eye’ test in how straight and solid it appears, the chances are high that a Walmart key duplicating machine will not ‘grip’ inside the unit.

Locksmiths can handle broken keys with ease by finding out the combination number on your lock, which serves as its identification. With this information, they can cut the key with the proper grooves and ridges to make a working copy.

Usually, when something needs a key to access it, it is either essential, expensive or both. Putting this faith into an impersonal, cheap medium like a Walmart key duplication machine is a gamble, as you may make it all the way home and realize that the key does not even fit into the lock. Locksmiths are an important cog in a home and automobile access, among other areas, because they can solve problems that alternatives cannot. A universal solution to key making sounds nice, but is simply isn’t practical overall. Even though some locksmiths require a slightly more significant investment, as a consumer, you are paying for quality, customer service, and above all else, execution. So next time when you are in such situation that requires professional help from a locksmith just call Key Smiths, and we will connect you to the nearest 24-hour locksmith.

Can I Get Copies Of Do Not Duplicate Keys?

Yes, you can copy a key that says “do not duplicate” on it, but not in every circumstance. Do Not Duplicate, or DND keys, are often to apartment complex entries and other more public areas.

It’s understandable that owners of community areas do not want those keys duplicated. The best tactic is to visit the original store or locksmith that produced the key to ask for a copy.

They will likely have a record of the original purchase, which will allow the key to be duplicated.

If that does not work, approach the landlord or rental office with your key duplication request.

Another option is to tell the maker of the key that you own the property and have the right to duplicate the key. This may satisfy some, but not all, key cutters.

Some companies will require proof of ownership, so be prepared to provide it.

Getting a new set of programmed transponder keys could be costly if you are availing them from the dealership. There is a difference in price on the basis of what kind of vehicle you seek duplicate keys for.

For multiple transponder keys, there will be an additional charge up to $100 per key. If you have a restricted budget, there are several ways you can program your transponder keys at a lower cost.

  • It is a time-sensitive situation
  • Your vehicle was made before the 90s.

Your local hardware store will charge anywhere from $1.25 to $2 to cut a basic key for you, whereas a locksmith would charge from $1.50 to $4 as they have a more extensive range and more variety in stock.

The cost of duplicating keys with additional features like a transponder can start anywhere from $1.20 at a locksmith. This is depending on the type of blank that is needed.

A dealership would charge $1.50 upwards as their keys are usually transponder keys.

Lowe’S

Like Home Depot, Lowe’s is a national hardware and home improvement store chain. It’s also an excellent answer to the question of “where can I get keys made near me?” If you live closer to a Lowes than a Home Depot, try them.

Call before driving over, especially if you need replacement car keys made, to make sure your Lowe’s offers this service.

Auto Parts Stores

Some auto parts stores will offer key copying services. While many auto parts stores only make copies of car keys, some make copies of other types of keys too.

Check with local auto parts stores such as:

The individual store locations can give you more information on what types of key copying services they offer.

What To Know About Getting Key Copies

Now that you have a fair number of options for key duplication, it’s worth covering a few basics about getting keys copied. Keys are copied in two main ways:

  • A key-copying kiosk or machine
  • Personal service from a key specialist

At kiosks, personal service is not typically involved. Insert your key into the machine, choose a design and follow the instructions. This option tends to be less expensive and quicker.

It is more common to have the option for a person to help you duplicate your key at a home improvement or hardware store. This is helpful if you haven’t copied a key before.

Ace Hardware

Ace Hardware was one of my father-in-law’s go to stores. Any time we needed a nut, washer, or screw, he’d take us there and help us find the part or tool we needed to complete our home improvement job.

The first time I lost my keys, Ace Hardware is where we went to replace them.

They have a number of options for color and style, and replace car keys, standard house keys and brass door keys.

Kmart

Kmart stores are owned by Sears and have over 400 locations throughout the U.S. Many locations will make copies of standard door and other keys, auto keys and custom design keys as well.

Your Local Locksmith

Local locksmith shops do still exist. If you want to get keys made you can simply do an Internet search for “locksmith near me”. It should populate a list of locksmiths in your area.

Note that getting key copies through a locksmith may cost more than through bigger stores. However, quality could be better as well since you’ve got professionals cutting your keys.

How Do I Use The Minutekey Kiosk?

To use the MinuteKey kiosk, you must have your key with you. MinuteKey kiosks utilize their own robotic technology to duplicate keys a minute after you begin. They also provide user-friendly touch displays and step-by-step instructions throughout the copying process.

  • Second, put the key you want to copy in the Self-Service slot.
  • Select a key design.
  • Now Choose your payment method.
  • Insert your payment method and watch until the machine produces your copy/copies.
  • Pick up your new copy/copies and remove the original key.

H-E-B

Do you live in Texas? Have you lost a key? Head over to your local H-E-B to get a new key made.

Many H-E-B locations offer key kiosks where you can get car keys made, house keys and other types of keys.

Give your local H-E-B a call before heading over to make sure they offer these services.

How Expensive Is It To Get A New Transponder Key?

RIf you need to get a new key, it’s going to be expensive. The general rule is that a set of keys for a domestic car is a lot cheaper than a foreign car. You can usually get a new key for a Ford or Chevy for under $200. If you need to get a new key made for a European car, it’ll run you anywhere from $250 to $450.

And, you’re going to want to get second, backup key made too. That’ll cost another $50-$100. It adds up. If there’s anyway you can get a replacement key for free, do it. For example, your car insurance or roadside assistance policy may include a free replacement key. You also want to check your car’s warranty. If your car is less than two years old, the warranty may cover the cost of a lost or damaged key. Some extended warranties will also cover this for you. Before you pay to get a new key made, check all of these things. It can end up saving you close to $500.

True Value Hardware

If you have a True Value Hardware in town, it may be an excellent option for key duplication.

Much like Ace Hardware, they offer a variety of key replacement services, including car and home keys. As with the other home improvement stores listed here, call before heading over to make sure your local store can replace your key.

Ace Hardware

Ace Hardware locations also have key copying services. They specialize in brass door and other keys, auto keys and more. Hours and services vary by location, so call or check their website before making the trip.

What Are Minutekey Kiosks?

The kiosks are located in various Walmart locations around the country for convenience for customers.

How Do I Get A New Key From The Dealership?

If you end up having to go to the dealer to get a new key, there are a few things you should know. First, you will need to prove that you are the owner of the car. You’ll need a copy of your registration and a valid ID. Your driver’s license should work. You also need to call ahead and make an appointment with the dealership’s service department. You can’t just show up and ask for a new key. If you do that, you’ll end up waiting for hours.

You may find out that the dealership can’t make a key right there on the spot. They may need to reach out to the manufacturer and get the information necessary to make a copy of your transponder key. You will probably have to get your car towed to the dealership. There is no other way to get your car there. Of course, the dealership will be glad to tow it for you – but they’ll charge you at least $100 or more to do it.

Faq’S

Here is some other information you might want to know before you go to get keys made. The information here is basic but might vary from store to store.

Depending on the store, you’ll generally pay anywhere between $1.50 and $3.00 per key copy. When I used the DIY machine at my local Walmart, they charged $3 per key. That seemed expensive, however they also offered me a deal to get two more keys for an additional $3.

The Home Depot

The Home Depot is my favorite place to have keys made nearby because they’re a one stop shop. If you lose your house key, bike key or car key, The Home Depot can replace it for you.

They’re quick and cheap, which makes them great. While my local Home Depot is perfect for getting car keys made near me, yours may not be. Not every Home Depot offers car key services, so call before you go.

Save Mart

Save Mart is a smart choice for key replacement. If you’ve lost a key fob or even a car key, you may be able to replace it at Save Mart.

This grocery chain makes it easy to copy your house key, office key or other common kind of key. What makes Save Mart stand out from other common grocers is that some locations also copy access cards.

Give yours a call before heading over.

Fred Meyer

Fred Meyer grocery stores are owned by Kroger. They have locations in Washington state, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. Most store locations offer key cutting services, making door keys, custom design keys and more.

Automotive Stores

Auto parts stores sell more than just car parts. They’re also great places to get car keys made.

They can also be a good place to find oil change specials if they do perform them there, or they may also provide coupons to local places that do.

Here are some common automotive stores that may be in your area where you can get keys made.

Where You Get The Duplicate Key Made:

Hardware stores will generally be able to help you. A lot of their employees do not have the experience that would enable them to give you more insight into your key cutting objectives. Because they specialize in key cutting, they can operate the machine to duplicate your key.

A locksmith or dealership will be a lot more helpful as they have been trained to duplicate keeps and program the transponders.

A dealership also carries a larger inventory and selection to choose from, whereas a hardware store does not normally have a lot of blank keys to choose from.

Winco

WinCo grocery stores are located in Washington State, Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada and more. They offer key copying services for brass and standard keys, custom keys and more.

Check locations near you for specific services and hours.

Mobile Locksmith Near Me

If you typed the above into an internet search, you may have been surprised at how many options your search returned. Where we live, there are nearly half a dozen mobile locksmiths.

Some mobile locksmiths will be local while others will be affiliates of a national chain, such as Carl Jarl or Keymasters.

As with locksmiths that aren’t local, make sure to read reviews about them to help you select someone who will get the job done right and not overcharge you.

While you will pay more for a mobile locksmith, the convenience of having someone come to you is nice. If you have a harder to replace key, this may be a good bet for you.

Is It Possible To Copy A Broken Car Key?

Yes, it is possible to copy a corrupted key, regardless of whether it is an owner key. You are limited on where you can do this because not all keymakers have access to the key they need. Final Thoughts:

Many RV manufacturers have started to use more secure locking systems on their baggage door compartments to reduce the risk of theft.

Although a lot of stores would be able to cut a simple key that you could use to access your vehicle, it is possible that the transponder will not work, and even though you will be able to turn on the ignition, the RV will more than likely not start.

Only a dealer or a capable locksmith will be able to program this for you, and high-security keys such as ASSA ABLOY and Medico will not be able to be copied or duplicated unless you take it back to where the original key came from.

If a car key breaks, you’ll need to make a new one unless you have an extra one. Most key copiers at hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowes cannot duplicate broken keys. In general, it is better to code a new car key than to trace back to a copy of the old one.
