Windows Defender: Is it good enough to secure Windows 10?
Windows 10 used to have security weaknesses and was subjected to attacks by malware that third-party antivirus software couldn’t protect. Microsoft has taken steps to make Windows safer over time, such as the addition of Windows Defender default in Windows 10.
That said, in the past, Windows Defender has been regarded as a fairly poor security solution, and simply a ‘better than nothing’ option. Windows Defender, however, is now capable of standing on its own. AV-Test (an independent antivirus testing laboratory) rates Microsoft’s solution highly. However, AV-Comparatives, which only gave Windows Defender a’standard” rating in recent malware protection tests, isn’t as enthusiastic.
While this is still good protection, Windows Defender offers a more hassle-free and cost-effective solution. It comes with Windows 10 and is free. Defender offers basic protection but it works.
However, other antivirus applications can provide additional privacy and security that makes them appealing to users.

Wirecutter set out to find the best anti-virus app. To do this, we did extensive research on software, read reviews and consult experts about safe computing. After all of that research, we discovered that the majority of people shouldn’t pay for traditional antivirus software like McAfee or Norton. They should also not use programs such as Avira or Avast. It turned out that there is no “best antivirus” available for the majority of people. Windows Defender, Microsoft’s built-in antivirus, is sufficient for most users.
We read dozens of results from independent labs such as AV Test AV Comparatives. Also, we read feature articles in many magazines like Ars Technica PCMag.
