Draper 62166 Steel Shafted Hand Axe

Fibreglass handles are very popular these days and are as strong as possible. However, traditionalists still prefer solid-metal shafted handaxes like this Draper tool one. Here’s an overview before I start:

Personal experience has shown me that metal handles for hammers and axes don’t reduce vibration enough. Draper’s rubber grip is a great solution. It does a great job at reducing vibrations and the rubber also keeps your clasp from sliding.

There’s a natural feeling when this axe is in your hand, and I think that’s largely due to the ergonomic handle having a slight curve to it, and the weight distribution of the tool being well-balanced.

I will say that it does feel a bit heavy after using it for a while, and the blade was pretty dull when the tool arrived, but these are minor complaints. The quality of the blade cover was not what I expected. However, it is a minor gripe.

This is a compact, lightweight axe, which can be used to split smaller logs into kindling. It feels very solid, as it should be being made mostly out of steel, and at less than 15 quid (at the time I wrote this) it’s not going to empty your bank account.

Helko Werk Germany Vario 2000 Universal Axe

>>> See Amazon’s Deals

Helko Werk’s universal axe is an example of the power and cooperation that international collaboration can bring. While the blade is German-made high-grade carbon steel and the handle are made from American hickory in Switzerland, both have the same material.

The head weighs 2.75 pounds, and the whole axe weighs six pounds. You’ll need to be fairly strong to use it comfortably.

It works well for log splitting, where its sloping wedge head cuts through wood cleanly. And it will handle tree felling too, with a feel very much like a traditional felling axe.

For a striking look, the handle measures 30 inches in length and has boiled Linseed Oil.

It comes with a full grain leather sheath to protect the blade. To make it easy to maintain, the kit includes a bottle of Axe Guard protective oil.

This is an expensive axe – second only to the Gransfors Bruks in terms of price. We’ve heard of some issues with the bit curving to one side, and splits in the handle. These appear to be minor quality issues.

We like this

  • Heavyweight, versatile axe
  • High quality materials
  • Leather sheath and protective oil included in the package

What We Don’t Like

  • Very expensive
  • Isolated issues with quality assurance – watch out for a curving bit or crack in the handle.

Like any Gransfors Bruk product, this splitting maul is arguably the finest example of quality craftsmanship available today. Each component of a Gransfors Bruk axe is handmade in Sweden by master craftsmen with decades of experience – and it shows.

Yes it looks beautiful and will last a lifetime – but the real beauty of this axe is how good it is at splitting wood. The axe is perfectly balanced, and its head geometry so well thought out that it seems to effortlessly slide through every piece of wood.

The metal collar on the neck provides a shield for over-striking, which can be the death of many an axe handle, but the hickory shaft has the ability to absorb any amount of shock applied to it.

Gransfors Bruk Splitting Maul includes a leather sheath made from vegetable-tanned leather to keep your blade safe when it is not being used. The axe book ‘The Axe Book” provides information on how to care for your new axe.

It is truly one of the best splitting axes on the market.

Fiskars get a hard time from the axe purists out there. Fiskars hollow, plastic/fiberglass handle is a mockery of all that a traditional axe represents. The Fiskars Super Splitting Axe is the best choice if you are looking for an axe to split wood like butter and don’t want an heirloom one.

It is amazing how well this axe splits wood. At a fraction of the price of some of the top axe brands, this axe performs just as well – if not better. The downside of buying a cheaper axe is the need for constant sharpening of the bit to keep it ready for action.

Fiskars use a lower grade steel for their axe heads which basically means its softer, therefore more susceptible to damage. As long as the user is willing to take care of their cutting edges after every use, this should not be a problem. Regular honing of the blade is required to keep this axe in tip top shape.

Made by master craftsmen using solid Swedish steel to hand-forge the axe head, and American hickory for the classic wooden handle the Bjork is a real workhorse that punches well above its weight.

It’s comfortable to hold and easy to swing making it ideal to use for longer periods than you would use a heavy maul.

Husqvarna is a popular chainsaw manufacturer in America. However, they also produce a mean-splitting axe. This classic straight- handled axe is one of the best selling wood splitters on Amazon.

Produced in Sweden, Husqvarna are a subsidiary branch of master forgers Hults Bruk which pretty much guarantees a high quality product. The American hickory shaft is used in this splitting axe, as well as a handmade axe head. This axe stays true to the tradition values of Hults Bruk.

Husqvarna is a great choice if you are looking for an excellent splitting axe and you don’t want to spend too much on heirlooms.

It is a beautifully crafted splitter with great reviews so check out the link below for full details of the Husqvarna Wooden Splitting Axe!

Weight: 5 lb / Length: 28 in.

This axe can be used to split large firewood logs. It is ideal for perfect weight and balance. The poll end can be used as a hammer in conjunction with regular splitting wedges and the fiber-reinforced shaft with a stainless steel component protects the handle while ensuring long life.

The axe head is coated with a non-stick finish which reduces friction while cutting into heavy wood. Husqvarna have really excelled in their modern axe design and the feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. Its not as pretty as a classic wooden axe but damn, it does what it’s supposed to do! It’s durable, tough and stays sharp throughout many a splitting session.

The shorter length makes it ideal for novices or people of the smaller persuasion. Great axe!

Weight: 8 lb / Length: 36 in.

If you need something bigger than a standard splitting axe, the maul is the answer. To really cut through stubborn logs, these axes have a thick steel poll at the end.

The maul is a true powerhouse and can cut through even the toughest logs. And the lightweight but indestructible handle enables you to generate maximum power with each swing.

Weight: 3.3 lb / Length: 19 in.

Many people don’t necessarily need a full sized splitting axe or maul, and the next few axes on the list are suited for smaller jobs but are no less effective. Much like the previous Gransfors Bruk entry on this list, this splitting hatchet is top of the line. It’s just a scaled down version on the Gransfors Bruk Splitting Maul for those who want something a bit easier to handle – but still need something that performs well.

The splitting hatchet can be used one-handed or both depending on what size of wood is being split. Gransfors Bruk’s familiar features include a high-carbon steel head. American hickory is used for the shaft, and a steel collar guard for protects against over-striking.

It’s an extremely versatile cutting tool that is razor-sharp right out of the box. It’s great for basic tasks like sortling and splitting logs. It’s a beautiful axe that will last a lifetime – Imagine showing this off to your friends!

Weight: 3 lb / Length: 20 in.

Designed primarily for small to medium splitting work, the Mini Spalter is an excellent choice for those looking for a classic small splitting axe.

At 20 inches long it still has enough leverage to use as a two-handed splitting tool as well as being handy for kindling and small jobs. This axe is less susceptible to being pinched or stuck than slimmer wedges.

This smaller Helko Werk Spaltaxt is beautifully crafted and has great ergonomics. It can also easily cut 10-12 inches of hardwood in 8-inch rounds.

Amazon reviews

Weight: 4 lb / Length: 14 in.

Estwing Fireside Friend proudly manufactured in America and forged out of one piece steel. If you’ve heard of Estwing before, you’ll know that their tools are almost indestructible and this mini maul is no different.

Hand-sharpened bits are ready to go and the head with a wedge shape easily cuts through wood due to its weight. For big logs, the poll end can be used to hammer. This is a unique feature that not all axes have (since the steel can be damaged if you hammer the poll with a regular axe).

I had concerns that the steel handle won’t provide ample shock resistance but the rubber shock reduction grip absorbs it easily. Amazon has over 2000 satisfied customers who have purchased this mini maul. It is great for splitting logs and making firewood, as well as being an essential tool for camping.

Use Handling Material

Your main choices when it comes to axe handle material are going to be wood (hickory on the Ruthe’s) and (fibre glass Bulldog or quality Fiskars). There are some axes and hatchets out there with metal handles, but they aren’t that common these days, and the ones that are usually have a rubber cover on the handle.

Wooden handles have been used on axes and hatchets for untold years, and with good reason. Hickory is strong, durable and light without becoming too heavy. It is also a great absorber of vibrations. There are potential problems with moisture-related damage and/or rot, however this can be easily prevented by properly disposing of the tool after use.

Fibreglass handles are resistant to moisture and insects. Fibreglass handles are lighter than wooden ones. Fibreglass handles aren’t usually used for heavier axe blades though, due to imbalance issues, but for small hatchets they can be ideal.

We are the right people to trust

Clark Tate was our chief tester. He grew up in wood-heated houses. That meant spending weekends watching trees fall to the sound of a chainsaw, splitting rounds, and stacking wood. She made a career of cutting down trees and managed invasive Russian olive trees along western rivers. And when you’re running rivers, you’re building fires. Clark’s no stranger to turning wood into kindling. She was also a part of a multi-generational team that ran the axes for her dad, Glen Tate. He is responsible for cutting down all those trees. His father was a farmer and he grew up cutting and bucking and milling trees for fences and barns.

The lead testers cut rounds and chopped logs. They then went on an aggressive autumn olive tree-chopping spree (because good habits die hard). It was clear from comparing notes and switching back and forth between the different axes which axes are balanced, sharp and built to be split and which ones are more tiring.

What We Did to Choose Our Top Picks

Quality gear should last for many years. We had a clear idea of what we wanted, so we searched for hatchets with a range of styles and materials. We ruled out axes, which are so much larger that they serve a very different purpose and could use a gear guide of their own. We also didn’t include tomahawks in the traditional sense; those with a narrow head and built for throwing. Some of the products here might be called axes or tomahawks in the description, but their short handles and broad cutting edges make them hatchets in our book.

Best Hatchet For Splitting Wood

Balance and Accuracy

It is hard work to cut wood. You want every swing to count. The blade of an axe that is balanced transfers power efficiently from the handle to the blade. This cuts through wood more effectively. The axe also integrates with your body to improve accuracy.

The shorter but very similar Gerber Freescape is also balanced and easy to put where you want it, particularly given its compact size.

Both make headway more quickly than the MTech and Schrade, which have similar and pleasant swings but less power. The MTech is more efficient and sharper of the two.

Fiskars Norden N12 has a heavier top than the other top choices, which makes it more difficult to swing with just one hand. The axe is not bad, but we have no trouble splitting wood and gripping the handle close to the head. We would still recommend a different type of axe for precise tasks.

Fiskars Super Splitting Axe

This Fiskars Super Splitting Axe is a great choice if you are unable to split wood due to your height. It is actually meant for taller people.

Believe me, I understand the struggle of being a tall person. Although I don’t consider myself to be super-tall, I do stand taller than most people my age.

However, my husband is a whopping 6’8″. This means he hits his head on just about everything, and the comfortable stances for most are not comfortable for him.

This axe is meant to help you chop larger-sized logs. And if you’ve ever chopped wood, you know those large logs are often doozies.

Hults Bruk Almike Hatchet

The Almike looks a lot like the classy looking GB Wildlife Hatchet, but once you pick it up you’ll see that the Almike is better suited for tackling logs larger than the Wildlife. Weighing in at a fairly hefty 1.75lbs and boasting a 16″ American Hickory shaft, the Almike packs a lot of power with good leverage and balance. It is made of Swedish steel and hand-forged. This makes it extremely durable while still maintaining its sharpness after many sharpenings.

This is a good option for slightly bigger chopping jobs at camp or at home – just make sure you’ve got your lumberjack shirt at the ready!

You can read the full Hults Bruk Almike Hatchet review for more information.

Gransfors Bruks Hunters Axe

Nobody knows sharp steel like the Swedes. When I borrowed my friend’s Gransfors Bruks Hunters Axe from him, it was difficult for me to turn it over to the rightful owner. The axes from this legendary company are the best I’ve ever used. Also the most expensive I’ve ever used, but you really do get what you pay for in these tools. The Hunters Axe is a tool designed specifically for hunters, and although it cuts wood effortlessly, it is designed to field dress, quarter, and skin large game.

The main difference between the Hunters axe and other G.B. The “flay poll” is what makes the Hunters axe different from other G.B. The poll of this axe is smoothly rounded and burnished to assist in removing the hide from an animal, even a frozen one. The blade is designed for chopping thru bones, like the pelvis and ribs. It weighs in at 1 1/2 pounds and has a 19-inch hickory handle. The axe comes with a guarantee of 20 years. If price is no object, invest in a Gransfors Bruks. You should never lend it out. Otherwise, you may not be able to get it back. Swedishax.com

Mid-Range

You can access better quality materials and workmanship by increasing your budget from $50 to $100. If you plan on carrying your hatchet outdoors rather than using it primarily in the garage and around the yard, spending a little extra on something more durable might be a worthwhile investment. Every hatchet is going to need some maintenance.

Hatchets like the Snow & Nealley Outdoorsman’s Belt Axe and Kershaw Deschutes are two examples of traditional and modern hatchets that can withstand the elements and the test of time. They take two different approaches but are equally valuable when you need a rugged cutting tool.

Safety

Safety is the most important consideration when working with sharp tools. Safety standards are met by almost all of the products available on the market. This means that there is less chance you could inflict injury to yourself.

However, you must remember to be vigilant and safe.

You can prevent the head from sliding by making sure it has a solid base and is properly positioned.

You will need to carry it around with you and keep it safe.

The character protects you from damage and dust when not in use.

Sharpness

To compare the sharpness of these axes, we tested them straight out of their boxes. The Gransfors Bruk’s razor-edge is what impressed us most. The three Fiskars axes, including the Gerber branded Freescape, are nearly as good as is the Kershaw Deschutes. All of them maintained a great edge throughout weeks of testing.

What is a Splitting Axe?

This axe was designed to cut wood, as its name implies. It has a tapered head that breaks fibers apart. Unlike chopping axes that cut across the grain, a splitting axe cleaves along the grain.

Is It Just A Small Axe?

Some people think a hatchet is really just a small ax, and as a result, it would just be used the same way. This is partially true. After all the parts and structure are very similar between the two.

The important thing to remember is that it is intended for one-hand use. This is why you sometimes see a hatchet referred to as a hand ax. We can see that the hatchet was designed for single-hand use when we look at things such as length, weight and grip.

Material for Heads

The material that comprises an ax’s head plays a big role in determining its overall value. Heads made from high-quality or high carbon steel will last longer and be sharper than those made of lower quality steel. Similarly, heads that have anti-corrosion coatings on their surfaces will last longer (though the coating may eventually wear off after heavy use).

The Japanese splitter ono, which is larger than the hatchet but lighter than the standard Western axe, can be used to cut wood. It’s ideally suited for smaller logs, its lightness offering you plenty of swing. The elegant design, which includes the lightening curves of the handle made from white oak and the head made out of darkened carbon-steel is simply stunning. A lovely addition to anyone’s tool rack.

Due to its compact, 14″ length, the Gerber Freescape is more of a purebred camping axe that can also chop wood when you need it to. Fiskars also makes it. It has a wedge-shaped head that can be used to split wood. However, the cheeks don’t have a concave shape so you can extract the blade between strikes. Its shorter length gives you less leverage but makes it very easy to wield.

How Do You Sharpen A Hatchet Or Axe?

Whether it’s an axe, a hatchet, a kitchen knife or even just a pocket knife, you’ve always got a variety of options when you want to sharpen a blade.

You can sharpen an axe or hatchet with a whetstone, a file or power tools such as a belt sander, a dremel, or angle grinder.

Take care. If you use power tools improperly, it can cause damage to your axe. If you are not an experienced user, it is best to keep your axe old-fashioned and use a stone or file.

As Seen on TV!

This camping axe provides better power for light and small cutting and chopping operations, which means cutting logs, branches and firewood is a breeze. The curved, ash tree handle is easy to grip and easy to use. Its size(15inches) is also ideal for providing timber for campfire camping, hiking and outdoor activities.

Sharp Axes: The hatchets blade is thin, the steelhead of the axe widens upward in a fan shape from the centre. This shape of the axe head allows it to easily split the firewood in half. It also comes with a leather cover and a rubber sleeve will be attached to the blade. The edge of the blade is very sharp and may break the cover during transport. Please be careful.

Maintenance: When the hatchet is received, it cannot be used directly. First of all, it arrives fairly blunt and will require some sharpening before cutting through even small branches efficiently. Get into the habit of lightly sharpening the axe blade before or after use, this will keep the camp axe in the best condition at all times. In addition, keep your camping hatchet in a dry room so that the blade does not rust and the wooden handle does not rot.

Kindling Axe Or Hatchet?

These terms can be interchanged. A kindling knife is a blunt-edged bladed and shorter-handled tool. This is what is most commonly used in America as a hatchet. British and Commonwealth regions are more comfortable using the term “kindling” axe. These terms are almost the same.

All hatchets have different purposes. Some are made to split kindling and firewood, while others can handle both. There are wilderness/camping hatchets that are designed to be multipurpose survival tools. If you put enough effort into it, they will cut wood but are not made for producing kindling. If you are looking for the best typeling hatchet, avoid wilderness and camping hatchets.

Head Weight and Handle Length

Two important things to consider when purchasing an axe is its headweight and the length of its handle. Knowing the intended usage of the hatchet is a great way to inform both these crucial decisions.

A smaller handle is required for a hatchet designed for wood carving and bushcraft. Longer handles are found on hatchets for cutting and splitting wood. Although both the long-handle and short-handle hatchets have their limitations, they can do certain jobs better than others.

Just like handle length and head weight, it is important to know what your hatchet should do. Smaller projects can be handled with ease by lighter axe heads. For wood splitting, heavier axe heads are the ideal choice because they can produce more swinging force.

Where you plan on using your camp hatchet the most often is also worth consideration. Weight shouldn’t be an issue if you camp a lot on the roads.

It is crucial to weigh your backpack if you plan on spending a lot time hiking or trekking in the wilderness. To save weight, you may need to sacrifice certain functionality.

While felling axes are designed to cut against the grain of wood – to chop it, essentially – splitting axes are intended to cut in parallel with the grains. They are actually being split apart. Since they aim to forcefully hit the target, their axeheads can be more heavy than that of felling.
