DEET is the common name for N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide. DEET was developed by the United States Army and is considered to be the best insect repellent. DEET insect spray should be used directly on the skin. It is intended to repel and not kill insects. DEET causes insects to buzz away by affecting their neurons and antennae.
But is DEET safe? The 30 percent protects for up to five hours. The fact that repellents with greater than 30 percent DEET are not effective in providing additional protection has been proven by studies.
