It is active learning when students actively participate in and are engaged with the learning process. Active learning for teachers is our goal. We know that students learn the most when they pay attention to what we teach and are engaged with it. The colors you choose for your classroom can help you achieve the goal of getting all students engaged with active learning.
It is crucial to not overstimulate students when planning your space and choosing the decorations and colors. They can become distracted and lose focus if there’s too much happening around them.
Consider choosing colors that encourage participation and retention of information. Bright colors can be a great way to stimulate the brain and improve memory. Here are some tips on how to incorporate them into your classroom.
Yellow: If you have a group of students who seems to have a tougher time paying attention, yellow is a great color to incorporate into your room. Not only can yellow help get your students’ attention but also it helps you to hold their attention during your lessons. You can make use of yellow paper to highlight important information or pages. Yellow accents can be used to bring yellow into your classroom’s overall design, such as chair cushions or baskets.
Green: Green has the ability to calm down students and allow them to concentrate for longer times on crucial tasks. This is likely because looking at green colors does not strain our eyes and allows them to rest. Green can have a positive impact on your students so you will want to consider ways that it could be incorporated into classroom design. Look for ways to add green near student seating areas to help them concentrate on the work they are doing at their desks. To create calmer spaces for students, you can add green accents to your classroom.
Orange: The addition of Orange to the diet can increase oxygen intake for our students. You can also improve their circulation and nervous systems. Orange can be a great color to add to your classroom. It will improve their mood.
If they are upset by something at recess, for example, adding more orange color to the area may be able to help them get on with their lives more quickly.

There are many issues that must be considered when schools are built or renovated. Color, particularly the color of classroom walls is often forgotten.
Bonnie Krims IACC is an architect color consultant for Bonnie Krims Color Studio. The decision to paint a school’s walls is often left to the teachers, administrators and maintenance staff. Many walls are left white because of this. It can also lead to depression. Krims said that there is another issue. Krims believes that once upon a time, it was believed that the more colorful a school would be, the better the children would feel. But recent research has proven that this isn’t the case. Many cases show that too much color (or too bright) can trigger overstimulation. “The goal is to find a balance,” she says.
International Association of Color Consultants – North America – The International Association of Color Consultants – North America (IACC-NA), states that a school’s external environment has a major psycho-physiological impact upon its students. According to the IACC, “The right color selection is essential in protecting your eyesight and creating a learning environment that encourages you to study, as well as in maintaining your mental and physical health.”
Jill Pilaroscia, IACC, Principal at Colour Studio, Inc. in San Francisco, says that while color selection is crucial because certain colors can have specific effects, there’s still flexibility. She says that there’s no one right way or a magic bullet for applying color. “Part of what will influence selection can be the geographic location of the school, the quality and character of life in the school, and the cultural background of the students.” However, she adds, there are some basics to consider, based on color psychology, visual ergonomics and biological response to colors.
Colors In Elementary, Middle And Junior High Schools
Pilaroscia claims that younger children tend be more active. Therefore, brighter colors can work well with warm tones and yellows. “One problem is that a lot of teachers hang so many things on the walls that classrooms can become complete visual chaos,” she says. It is important to try to have an orderly and organized room, to reduce the amount of nervousness and anxiety in the students.
Amy Wax, IACC, the owner and operator of Your Color Source Studios, Inc., Montclair, N.J., echoed her sentiments. “In most classrooms, there are a lot of other things competing with wall colors, such as posters, artwork, etc.,” she says. Wax says that these can create overstimulation. Wax also suggests that younger children should seek balance between colors. Wax states that the goal with young children is for some stimulation, but not too much. Wax recommends that students be greeted by warm colors and feel at home in classrooms. She says that primary colors are preferred by younger children, who prefer yellow, red, and blue. Wax says that children can become anxious if they are too stimulated by a bright or strong color. Consider a creamy yellow as an alternative to bright yellow. The warm color draws on the primary color but doesn’t overstimulate. She warns that too many colors, like a beige or a white, can cause understimulating effects.
One of the benefits of color is that it can help you focus. “You want to draw students’ attention to the front of the room, so maybe the wall where the teacher is located could be a brighter color, such as a yellow or a red,” she says.

According to current research, students learn a lot from what they hear, feel and smell. One of the hottest trends in education is brain-basedlearning.
Randy Fielding of Fielding Nair International is the chair of Fielding Nair International. The Minneapolis-based planning and design company specializes in educational environments. Fielding, who is also the founder and CEO of DesignShare.com which offers resources to designers for designing learning environments, says that research indicates students do best when they are surrounded by color.
He says that a well-designed palette can offer a wide range of colors, which includes calm blues and greens as well as more vibrant reds, oranges, or yellows. Combining lighter colors with darker accents creates an atmosphere of place. Functional color is a way to enhance learning and reduce eye strain. Students find high contrasts stimulating. Lighter tones, however, can help them focus. Research has shown that student absences are more likely to occur when students use monotonous colors.
Fielding believes that the key to creating learning environments is using a diverse range of colors, and an array of intensity. Some hues are also used in cultural-building areas as way-finders and culture-builders.
His words: “In a cold environment, warm, earthy hues invite teachers and students to snuggle into a comfortable cafe area for both collaborative and reflective learning.” Students can enjoy a more relaxed environment in warm climates. Fielding also disproves certain commonly believed beliefs about color’s effects. Fielding says that red doesn’t over-stimulate. Too much soothing green can dull the senses rather than relax them. It is important to avoid using bright primary colors that are long considered elementary-age favourites. Fielding states that “Children have a remarkable ability to sense the subtleties of color and light.” Fielding isn’t picky about which colors are best.
