Walmart’s amazing range of cheap merchandise can be viewed both online and in-store. But, when shopping in one of Walmart’s physical stores, you might be asked to show an associate your receipt before leaving.

Walmart workers can ask for your receipt to be checked before you go, but it is your right to refuse. Walmart associates have the right to force you show your receipt, and may even arrest you inside the store, if they believe you shoplift.

Again, however, Walmart associates asking for receipt scans do not signify that you’re suspected of theft.

Walmart just wants you to know that your merchandise has been paid. However, not all Walmart stores will scan your receipt.
What happens if your receipt is lost?
If you lose your receipt before leaving Walmart, then don’t worry! You can retrieve your receipt by using your payment card once you have realized you lost it.
Walmart’s online Receipt Lookup service allows you digitally copy the receipt to show it off to associates. Just enter the purchase place and other details.
If you are not satisfied with the service, ask for a refund.
Walmart Will Prevent you From Going Home?
Since receipt checks are voluntary, Walmart cannot take any further action if you refuse to show your receipt to an associate.
If there is reasonable suspicion you have shoplifted then they may detain your person in-store.
There will be different definitions of reasonable suspicion in each state. It is generally determined by the observation of merchandise being removed, statements made by customers and staff, or surveillance video.
This suspicion will ensure that associates don’t try to stop you or force you into physical custody.
Walmart Does Not Check Receipts Right Now
Walmart did not always inspect receipts the same way they do today.
This shift could be due to a step up in theft action, which in 2015 contributed $3 billion to the company’s losses. It was only 1% from Walmart’s total revenues.
Also, the self-checkout machine was recently added to Walmart stores.
It is much more simple to remove a product from your basket using a self checkout machine than it is scanning.
As such, more associates were likely to be stationed near the exit doors in order to ensure that all shoppers’ receipts match the items inside their bags. Walmart Canadian stores confirmed this.

Walmart may ask you to verify your receipt before you leave. In fact, they very often do due to significant revenue losses caused by theft.
