Corded vs Battery-Powered
Both cordless and battery-powered sanders were compared. We were unsure if the cordless sander would be too heavy due to the battery. After weighing the tools we discovered that they were almost identical in weight, even after adding the cord. A cordless sander is best if you work on a lot of job sites or have done a lot with cordless tools. A cordless tool is great for climbing ladders, scaffolds, and other places where you don’t want to have to deal with the burden of a cord. Because they are more mobile than corded tools, cordless sanders prove to be especially useful in such situations.
For long periods of time at the bench, it is worth having a corded sander. This will allow you to connect your tool directly to an outlet and not need an extension cord. In these cases, cord drag isn’t an issue and there isn’t a pressing need for mobility. You are sanding furniture. It is easy to work your best at sanding a piece of furniture by slowly working through every grit.
How to Test: We drew rectangular shapes on maple, plywood and softwood pieces and sanded them with an 80grit disc. To determine how much dust was collected, we empty the dust bag or container. The dust was also removed from the working surface. When we got to work, we checked the sander for vibrations and any gyroscopic effects when the tool was taken off the tester board. As important as any of the other tests was to examine the sanded surface to see whether the tools left swirl marks.
Homeowners could benefit from any of the sanders used in this test. Makita’s, DeWalt’s, Bosch’s, Metabo HPT models are much more robust and vibrate at a lower frequency than homeowner-grade models. For most household uses, however, you will find a cheaper tool that is equipped with a superior abrasive material.

What to do with a wood sander?

There is no substitute for an electric sander when you need to sand large jobs. When it comes to power and efficiency, they are your best choice.
A power sander can be a better choice than a hand-held sander in most cases. Hand-sanding is only limited in its effectiveness. The ease of having a tool perform the job instead of you using your hands or multiple sheets of sandpaper makes it more cost effective. Half-sheet sanders require a quarter inch (or less) of a piece of standard-sized sandpaper. Those models shaped to fit comfortably into one hand, are called palm grip sanders
Half-sheet Sanders are twice as bulky and heavy than regular sanders.
The finishing sander refers to any sander which leaves a smooth, clean surface suitable for applying varnishes or other clear finishes.

Random Orbit Sanders
It is your best choice for almost all cases. You can choose from corded or cordless options, as well as pneumatic (air) models. The random orbit sander, the most popular handheld sander, is available in all three types. These sanders can be used on all kinds of materials, from plastics to metal to wood. They are arguably the most effective sander because of their random scratch patterns. Heavy stock removal is possible with their 60 grit paper. Their 220-grit paper makes them excellent at fine sanding, or between coats.
It is important to not lift your sander off the ground and instead sand flat. This will make you appear faster. What you are actually doing is gouging your material. Although most random orbit sanders only come in 5-inch models there are also a few 6-inch models.
The 6-inch model we don’t recommend is for purchase. They are difficult to find, so we don’t recommend it. Speaking of sandpaper, don’t buy the cheapest you can find. You should always buy higher quality paper. We have reviewed Diablo sanding disks and found them to be excellent.

You will need to consider your budget, time and project requirements when choosing the best wood sanders. Even though sanders cost a bit more than a thousand dollars, it is possible to get started by using just a few of these basics.
It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an expert in woodworking. There is always something you can learn about sanding.
To stain maple wood or pine, you need to take extra precautions to prevent stain-ruining smears from random orbit sanders. On larger surfaces, you will want highly precise tools such as a drum sander, which will create a flat finish. And, help you achieve a top quality finish.

How to Use An Electric Sander
An electric sander is something you’re familiar with if your shirt can be ironed. First, set the sander down with the grit pad attached to the velcro underneath (see the chart below on which grit level to use). You do most of the work by using the sander’s weight. It’s enough to move it about enough that the furniture is no longer shiny. You just want the surface roughed up enough so that the new paint grabs onto the old surface. When you have sanded the surface, wipe the furniture piece down with a moist rag and you are ready for primer.

You should also consider the feel of your sander in your hands when purchasing a sander. The tip and bottom of the sander are covered with plastic. Or, is it steel? Is the tip removable and will it break easily? Do you have detachable Velcro? This allows for the easy removal of sanding blocks. Does it use generic size sanding pads?
