NFC, or near field communication, has made contactless payments the most secure and convenient way to pay with thousands of retailers and grocers.

Apple is one of the companies that rely upon NFC in order to provide support for its Apple Pay technology. It allows iPhone users pay online or at cash registers using their Apple Wallet.

So, is USPS accepting Apple Pay payments? This is your chance to be amazed at how the USPS handles Apple Pay.

What will the USPS do with Apple Pay 2022

The United States Postal Service currently does not accept Apple Pay, or other NFC forms of payment. This is effective as of 2022. Customers are restricted to cash or credit cards as payment options. While current card readers can be used for NFC, USPS has deactivated that technology.

  • Keep reading to learn more about why the USPS won’t accept Apple Pay and what payment methods they accept.
  • What’s the deal with Apple Pay by USPS?

USPS doesn’t have a specific reason for not accepting Apple Pay. But some Redditors do.

  • User u/rmiw said “It wouldn’t surprise me if they had to do a whole lot more to get it turned on than others if they’re using their own custom system for it.”
  • The USPS has access to sensitive information of millions of individuals. Additionally, as a federal agency, its regulations are quite strict.

This could definitely account for why the post office locations do not accept near-field communication (NFC) technology like Apple Pay.

  • U/johnthrives also commented that the credit cards machines of their customers are “so outdated …””.
  • This also checks out, as my local post office’s credit card machines, despite being outfitted for NFC and Apple Pay, processed basic debit card transactions incredibly slowly.

Because of its high-speed machinery and federal status, it’s not surprising that Apple Pay has been rejected by USPS.

What types of Payments Does USPS Accept?

The USPS accepts many payment options, even though they do not offer cutting-edge methods of payment. They include:

  • Solid, classic cash
  • Major credit/debit cards, like Visa, MasterCard, AmEx, and Discover (debit cards can receive up to $50 in cash back, in $10 increments)
  • Carte Blanche
  • Diners Club
  • JCB
  • China Union Payment
  • Personal checks (postal only)
  • One of the last outposts for accepting personal checks, you can bring your checkbook if:

  • Your name and address are printed on the check by the manufacturer
  • Valid ID from your state. Names should match.
  • Does USPS Take Samsung Pay?

Strangely, though Apple Pay doesn’t appear to be available at certain post offices, it appears that some accept Samsung Pay and Google Pay.

Some customers also report more recent kiosks in post offices. Samsung Pay users with any of these cards tied to their accounts have been allowed to use the above cards.

Although it seems that most post offices don’t offer contactless payment, there are some.

These locations, however, do not as of yet accept Apple Pay. Samsung Phone users will be able to use Samsung Pay instead.

It seems like the Samsung Pay system is caught on guard by clerks.

One Redditor did comment that they had to enter their PIN and sign.

Although the NFC works technically, you still need to use a pin pad or a pen.

And another commenter ran into a bit of resistance when they successfully used contactless pay – the manager informed them it was against “company policy” to accept any smartphone payment method.

Maybe the location didn’t disable NFC.

PayPal can be used to make payments to the USPS

USPS announced, in June 2012, that PayPal and PayPal would allow customers to pay online.

This payment option is only available online via USPS’s Click N-Ship service.

As customers often prefer to use their cards via PayPal over direct transactions, this is a well-loved advantage.

PayPal allows you to pay online without having to enter any financial data.

This arrangement was convenient for consumers because most online merchants already use PayPal to receive payment for goods and services.

  • Conclusion
  • Although Apple Pay cannot be accepted by USPS at the moment, they clearly have all the tools in place.

USPS also accepts major credit/debit card and Paypal online. Some post office locations may even allow Samsung Pay.
